MACON, Ga. (School Release) - The Mercer women's soccer team scored early and often on its way to a 7-0 win over Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon at Bear Field.

Mercer (4-3-1) scored six goals in the first stanza to effectively put the game out of reach by halftime. The Bears seven goals in the victory was the most they have scored in a single game since downing South Carolina State 12-0 back in 2004.

Mercer out-shot Alcorn State (0-4) by an incredible 26-4 margin and held a staggering 13-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

The Bears wasted little time jumping all over the Lady Braves, scoring their first goal of the afternoon just three minutes into the contest.

Junior Nicole Young ran onto a loose ball and hammered a shot from 40 yards away just under the crossbar and past Alcorn State goalkeeper Ashley Murray to put Mercer up 1-0.

The goals kept coming for the home team, when sophomore Briana Stampler buried a long strike of her own just two minutes later to put the Bears ahead, 2-0.

The Orange and Black held a 3-0 lead moving towards the end of the first half before stepping their offensive pressure up a notch. Mercer tallied three goals in the final three minutes of the period, one each by sophomores MacKenzie Stewart and Tess Patton and freshman Sydney Brogden, to make the score 6-0 going into halftime.

Sophomore Lauren Gassie tallied her second goal of the game and team-leading fifth goal of the season in the second half to make the score 7-0 and conclude the scoring in the contest.

Freshman Maggie Cropp and junior Nikki Atkinson each played one half in net for the Bears, with Cropp making one save and Atkinson stopping two shots to preserve the shutout.

Mercer is back in action on September 14 when it travels to Alabama to take on Jacksonville State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field.
