Mercer opens season against The Citadel

MACON - The Mercer Bears kick off a new season against Southern Conference rival The Citadel Thursday night at 5 Star Stadium on the Mercer campus.

The two teams have played back to back close games with The Citadel coming out on top both times by two points.

Mercer jumped out to a ten-nothing lead last season but could not hold off the Bulldogs.  The Bears did rally in the fourth quarter and pulled within 21-19 on an Alex Lakes one yard touchdown run but the Bears failed on the two point conversion attempt and The Citadel came out on top 21-19.

The Citadel enters this week’s game ranked No. 15 in both the Coaches and the STATS polls. Mercer is 1-2 all-time against ranked opponents but pulled out a 17-14 win over No. 3 Chattanooga on Nov. 7, 2015 in the program’s last game against a ranked foe.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Thursday night and the game will be broadcast on FOX Sports Southeast.  Tickets are available for $15.
