Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Prince Fielder hit a pair of two-run homers,
including the go-ahead blast in the eighth inning, to lift the Detroit Tigers
to a 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of a three-game set at
Comerica Park.
Miguel Cabrera worked a two-out walk before Fielder welcomed reliever J.C.
Romero with the go-ahead shot to right field.
Fielder also homered in the sixth inning to tie the game. Miguel Cabrera added
a homer for the Tigers, who have won three in a row.
Justin Verlander started for Detroit and allowed three runs on six hits and
struck out six over six frames. Joaquin Benoit (2-3) earned the win after
tossing a perfect eighth.
Jose Valverde worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to pick up his 23rd
save of the season.
Matt Wieters had a two-run homer and Nick Markakis had two doubles and knocked
in a run for the Orioles, who have lost two in a row after winning three
straight.
Darren O'Day (6-1) was saddled with the loss after putting Cabrera on in the
eighth before Fielder's homer.
