Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Starting pitchers Adam Wainwright and Chris
Carpenter, two of the St. Louis Cardinals' postseason heroes of the past, were
both included on the team's 25-man roster for its National League Division
Series with the Washington Nationals.
Neither player was active for Friday's 6-3 victory over Atlanta in the wild
card playoff, nor was fellow starter Jaime Garcia. All three have been added
for this series, with each scheduled to start one of the first three games.
Wainwright, the closer on the 2006 St. Louis squad that won the World Series,
will take the ball in Sunday's Game 1, with Garcia slated to follow on Monday.
Carpenter, who amassed a stellar 4-0 record with a 3.25 ERA in six starts
during St. Louis' run to last season's World Series title, will begin Game 3
when the series shifts to Washington on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander
has missed the majority of 2012 due to arm surgery, but returned to make three
late-season starts.
Relief pitcher Sam Freeman, catcher Bryan Anderson and infielder Ryan Jackson
were left off the NLDS roster to make room for the trio after each was
eligible to play in the wild card game.
