Flagstaff, AZ (Sports Network) - Damon Heuir scored a season-high 30 points
to lead the Southern Utah Thunderbirds to a 90-77 victory over the Northern
Arizona Lumberjacks, in a Big Sky matchup at the Walkup Skydome.
For the Thunderbirds (5-7, 3-0 Big Sky), Jackson Stevenett added 14 points
and Wade Collie chipped in with 10 points. Julian Scott added 13 points off
the bench.
Gabe Rogers led the Lumberjacks (5-9, 2-2) with 23 points, while DeWayne
Russell finished with 18 points, Max Jacobsen scored 16 points and Michael
Dunn added 10 points.
Southern Utah came out of the gate red-hot, connecting on 62.5 percent of
its field goal attempts in the first half, draining 6-of-10 from beyond
the 3-point arc, en route to a 42-30 lead at halftime. Northern Arizona shot
just 34.4 percent from the field in the half, missing all but one of its six
3-point attempts. The Thunderbirds used a 19-2 run early in the half to build
their big lead.
The second half was a more competitive contest, with the Lumberjacks hitting
48.4 percent, but just 2-of-11 from 3-point range. The Thunderbirds shot 50
percent from the field, but only took three 3-point attempts, making one. The
Lumberjacks were able to cut their deficit to just five midway through the
second half, but they would get no closer, as the Thunderbirds remained
perfect in league play.
The Thunderbirds had a big advantage at the free-throw line, outscoring the
Lumberjacks 33-22. Northern Arizona forced 22 Southern Utah turnovers and
converted them into 22 points.
