Edwardsville, IL (Sports Network) - Mark Yelovich scored a game-high 24
points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the SIU Edwardsville Cougars to an
80-77 victory over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in an Ohio Valley
Conference clash at the Vadalabene Center.
For the Cougars (7-10, 3-4 OVC), Jerome Jones added 19 points, Michael Messer
finished with 13 points, and Kris Davis chipped in with 12 points.
Corey Wilford scored 21 points to lead the Redhawks (11-11, 3-5), while
Marland Smith finished with 15 points. A.J. Jones and Tyler Stone both got
into the mix as well by netting 12 and 11 points, respectively.
SEMO connected on 56.3 percent of its shots from the field in the first
half, giving it a 43-39 lead at the break. The visitors also hit on 3-of-8
from 3-point range while SIUE shot 48.3 percent from the field including a 3-
of-5 mark from beyond the 3-point line.
After intermission, the Cougars heated up to make 56.5 percent of
their field goal tries, including 4-of-6 from 3-point distance. The Redhawks
were held to just 39.3 percent shooting from the field in the second half.
After falling behind by nine early in the half, the Cougars went on a 26-4 run
to go ahead by double digits. The Redhawks would cut the lead to two on
several occasions, the last in the final 16 seconds, but the Cougars were able
to hold on for the victory.
The Cougars dominated in the paint, outscoring the Redhawks 40-28. The
Cougars also had a 37-30 rebounding edge in the game.
