Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Karol Gruszecki scored 14 to lead five players in
double figures as the Texas-Arlington Mavericks defeated the Utah State
Aggies, 74-68, in Western Athletic Conference action at the Dee Glen Smith
Spectrum.
Brandon Edwards and Cameron Catlett added 13 points for the Mavericks (9-8,
4-4 WAC). Shaquille White-Miller finished with 11 points and Greg Gainey
chipped in with 10 points.
For the Aggies (14-4, 5-3), Spencer Butterfield posted a double-double of 23
points and 11 rebounds, while Ben Clifford added 12 points and Marvin Jean
scored 11 points. The Aggies have dropped three in a row.
The teams were knotted at halftime, 33-33. UT Arlington shot 34.4 percent
from the field, including 4-of-11 from 3-point range. Utah State also shot
34.4 percent and was 4-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc in the opening half.
After intermission, the Aggies continued to struggle from the field, making
only 32.1 percent of their field goal tries, including 6-of-15 from 3-point
range. The Mavericks shot much better, connecting on 47.8 percent of the
field goal attempts, but just 1-of-4 from 3-point range. The Mavericks
regained the lead a on a White-Miller 3-pointer to start the second half and
they never relinquished it, holding on for the win and snapping a two-game
Western Athletic Conference losing streak.
The Mavericks had a decided edge on points in the paint, 24-14. The Aggies
had the advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Mavericks, 41-36.
