Boone, NC (Sports Network) - Jamaal Trice led the way with 18 points as the
Appalachian State Mountaineers outlasted the Samford Bulldogs in double
overtime, 70-67, in a Southern Conference showdown at the Holmes Center.
For the Mountaineers (13-15, 9-8 SoCon), Tevin Baskin added 10 points, as APSU
pulled into a tie with Samford for second place in the conference's North
Division. With a win Saturday in their regular-season finale against
Chattanooga, the Bulldogs will clinch second place and a first-round bye in
the conference tournament.
Tyler Hood led all scorers with 22 points for the Bulldogs (11-19, 9-8), while
Tim Williams finished with 12 points and Connor Miller chipped in with 11.
APSU took a 33-29 lead into the break by shooting 48.1 percent from the field
in the first half. Samford made 44.8 percent of its field goals before the
break.
After intermission the Bulldogs got hot, connecting on 57.1 percent of their
field goal tries, but just 1-of-4 from 3-point range. The Mountaineers fell to
40.9 percent shooting from the field and 3-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc.
After trailing by eight, 59-51, with just over four minutes to play, the
Mountaineers scored eight unanswered points down the stretch to force
overtime. Jay Canty of APSU made one of two free throws with 31 seconds
remaining to tie the score at 59-59, and a 3-pointer by the Mountaineers'
Clide Geffrard, Jr. was blocked by Baskin in the final moments of regulation.
In the first extra session both squads struggled, with each scoring just two
points. Canty had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but his potential game-
winning layup was off the mark.
In the second overtime Trice opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and the
Mountaineers remained in front the rest of the way, as they held on to win in
what was the school's fifth overtime contest of the campaign, a new single-
season record.
Samford outscored APSU in the paint, 40-30. The Mountaineers had the edge in
free-throw scoring, 14-7.
