New York, NY (Sports Network) - Cappie Pondexter of the New York Liberty and
Nneka Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks were named the WNBA's Eastern
and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for the period
ending Sept. 16.
Pondexter earned the honor for the 13th time in her career after averaging 26
points, nine rebounds and 5.5 assists per game for the week. The the former
Rutgers guard led the Liberty in scoring and assists in each of the past four
games.
Ogwumike collected weekly honors for the second time this season. The rookie
forward posted her eighth career double-double with a 30 point, 11 rebound
performance in a win against the Chicago Sky. Ogwumike then scored 17 points
with eight rebounds and three assists to help the Sparks take down the
Connecticut Sun on Sept. 14.
Other players considered for the award were Angel McCoughtry of the
Atlanta Dream and Ivory Latta of the Tulsa Shock.
