20 people were injured when a truck struck a Bibb County school bus in east Macon this afternoon.

It happened at the intersection of Gray Highway and Old Clinton Road.

Macon police Sgt. Ricky Wolverton said it appears that the tractor-trailer ran a red light before striking the bus.

CraigHarris, the driver of the truck, told 13WMAZ's Lorra Lynch Jones that he ran the red light after his brakes failed.

School district spokeswoman Alisha Allen-Carter said two adults, including a chaperone on a field trip, and 18 students were taken to a local hospital.

She said the injuries did not appear critical.

School Safety Director David Gowan says the bus carried students from Northeast High School and the Hutchings Career Center returning from a future business leaders event at Wesleyan College.
