The driver of a truck that overturned on Interstate 16 east Thursday afternoon has died, according to Bibb County coroner Leon Jones.

He said the driver was 58-year-old Willie Flantroy from Decatur. Eastbound traffic on I-16 was at a standstill for several hours because of the wreck.

According to a press release Friday, Flantroy was heading west on I-16 near mile marker 3 when witnesses told police that he appeared to be turning left off the roadway, striking the passenger side of his cab on the guardrail.

The truck became airborne at that point, coming down on the rear of the truck bed and flipping over on the roof of the truck.

He pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the case remains under investigation as a cause of death and cause of the accident are explored.
