Republican State Representative Matt Hatchett, a Dublin native, is running against Democrat Sheikh Rahman for the District 150 seat. 13WMAZ talked to both candidates about what they are hoping to offer voters as a state representative.

That district includes Laurens, Treutlen and parts of Johnson County.

Hatchett, who is running for his second term, told 13WMAZ that his work brought funding to Laurens County schools.

He called it "my biggest legislative accomplishment."

If re-elected, he said he would continue to focus on bringing jobs to the region.

"We've got to get people back to work," he said. "You're never going to have everybody back to work but get our country back to work. When that happens, these issues are not going to be issues."

He says his "biggest passion" is working with the local and state economic development agencies to bring jobs to Georgia "and hopefully to my district."

Sheikh Rahman, the Democratic nominee, said he is a rental property owner and came to America from Bangladesh decades ago.

"I came to this country 34 years ago, started washing dishes and went to collage and, job-wise, I went from dishwasher to district manager of the corporation," said Rahman.

Rahman said he wants to bring some of his business experience to the office. He also said that he has worked on other democratic causes.

"I don't think we have a strong leadership now especially in this community of rural Georgia we need a strong voice and I want to serve that community and be a strong voice. And I think I can do that because of my experience on the corporate level business," said Rahman.

He said if elected he wants to bring in more funding to local schools.

"It took me 14 years to finish my education. When I went to college, I couldn't afford school. I had to quit school. I went there after eight years and am a proud graduate of University of Georgia. I am a proud Georgia Bulldog. Education, education, education--we got to do whatever it is to compete in this global world," said Rahman.
