MACON, Ga. - Two games into the 2012-13 season, Mercer men's basketball head coach Bob Hoffman continued to build the future of his program with the signing of D.J. Brooks to a National Letter of Intent on Thursday.
"D.J. is a tremendous basketball player who understands the game at a high level," Hoffman said. "He's been coached by one of the best coaches anywhere in Reggie Choplin. We expect D.J. to be able to walk right in and help us in a lot of different areas."
Brooks is a two-time All-Region and All-County selection heading into his senior season at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, South Carolina. After a stellar junior campaign, the 6-foot-1 point guard has been a class AAAA pre-season top-five senior by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.
"I think Mercer University is a great fit for DJ to continue his academic and athletic endeavors," Choplin said. "The coaching staff really developed a relationship with him during his recruitment and he feels comfortable with the players and environment at the school."
As a junior, Brooks averaged 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds per game while leading the Rams to a 22-5 record. In only three seasons with the team, Brooks has already contributed to 70 wins as a varsity player. In the classroom, Brooks carries a 3.4 GPA and has been recognized as Hillcrest High School Student of the Month. He also maintains continuous involvement with various school activities sponsored by Student Council and was a member of the 2012 Homecoming court.
