The American Red Cross wants your blood. But then, so does a Florida-based organization, LifeSouth. Does it matter which one you donate blood to? One local Red Cross official thinks so.

Kristen Kiefer emailed 13WMAZ in response to a blood drive run by Life South this week.

Her email said,"LifeSouth does not provide blood to the hospitals in Middle Georgia. This blood drive will be taking blood away from Medical Center of Central Georgia, Houston Healthcare, and the patients in our community."

It went on to say,"We find it concerning that a competitor is receiving media coverage that has the potential of damaging the blood supply in this community."

LifeSouth says they work with nearly 30 hospitals in Georgia and have worked with Medical Center of Central Georgia in the past. J.D. Pettyjohn with LifeSouth said that they have worked with Medical Center of Central Georgia and would help the hospital, or any hospital with blood if they needed it.

"My perspective is that it doesn't matter which organization you give blood to, giving blood is a good thing to do," said Pettyjohn.

The American Red Cross of Central Georgia maintains that they are the best option for those wanting their blood to stay local.

"We would like to say that if you want your blood to be available to the hospitals then they need, the folks that are donating need to make sure that they are donating with the American Red Cross," said Jackie Connors, Regional Business Manager for the Red Cross.
