(WXIA) - Rapper Drake took to Instagram on Christmas Day, demanding a cut from retailers Walgreens and Macy's for their sales of merchandise with the term "YOLO."

Drake insists he coined the phrase in his 2011 song "The Motto," and says that earns him the right to money from associated merchandise.

" gotta either chill or cut the cheque," one Instagram message said. A second one said, "Macy's...same goes for you."

No comment from either retailer, butthe website Gawker notes that there are more than 100 active and inactive trademark applications for the term YOLO in the United States at the present time.

KnowYourMeme.comtraces the first use of the term in mainstream media to contestant Adam Mesh in a third season episode of the NBC reality series Average Joe in 2003. Mesh's company developed a clothing line emblazoned with the term in 2004.
