Officials are investigating a fatal Bleckley County fire that happened early Thursday morning.

Glenn Allen, spokesman for the Georgia Department of Insurance, tells 13WMAZ that one person was killed in a fire at 147 Hudson-Jones Road in Cochran.

He identified the victim as 67-year-old Larry Elwynn Libby. He was a retired teacher.

Allen said the cause is unknown, but the cause is not believed to be suspicious.

He said the fire apparently started in the living/dining room area, and there was no sign of a working smoke detector in the home.

Allen said he is the ninth fatality in the state in 2013.

That includes the four children who died in a Conyers fire this week. There was also no working smoke detector in that home.

Allen says no one else was in the house at the time.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
