Denton, TX (Sports Network) - Tony Mitchell registered 14 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks as the North Texas Mean Green captured a 66-56 win over the South Alabama Jaguars in Sun Belt Conference action at The Super Pit.
P.J. Hardwick also netted 14 points, a career-high, for North Texas (7-11, 2-5 Sun Belt), while Jordan Williams scored 13, Alzee Williams netted 11, and Roger Franklin chipped in 10 points and seven boards before fouling out.
For South Alabama (8-8, 5-3), Freddie Goldstein and Augustine Rubit scored 12 points apiece. Mychal Ammons added 10 points off the bench.
North Texas jumped out to a 26-7 lead early on and held the Jaguars to just 21.2 percent shooting in the first half. The Mean Green hit 40.7 percent of their field goal attempts and led 36-22 at halftime.
North Texas extended its lead to 21 points midway through the second half, and stout free throw shooting late helped the Mean Green hang on, as they made 16- of-18 from the foul line after the break.
The Mean Green hit a season-high 29 free throws at an 85.3 percent clip, and they improved to 8-13 all-time against South Alabama.
