Kenneth Tharpe, 51, made his first appearance in Bibb County Magistrate Court Monday, charged with felony murder after allegedly shooting and killing 60-year old Kelvin Davis of Dry Branch.

Sheriff's investigators sayDavis went to see a woman living on the 34-hundred block of Lancing Circle, off Masseyville Road in east Bibb County.

Police says Davis ended up getting into a verbal argument with Tharpe, who was also at the home. That's when, around midnight, Tharpe killed Davis with two shots to the chest.

Tharpe is being held in the Bibb County Jail without bond.

The alleged murder marks the first homicide of 2013 in Bibb County. Sheriff Davis Davis says over the past few years, homicides have been on the decline.

Last year, there were 24 homicides in Bibb County, most of which were in the city of Macon. Davis says he attributes the lower numbers in part to community involvement.

"There's been enough emphasis given to these serious, interpersonal type crimes that we hope that the community continues to take this very seriously and to intercede where they can with our youth and people that are having problems with each other to not resort to firearms to settle their differences," Davis says.

Davis says he hopes with consolidation coming up, to keep the number of homicides down by using the best practices and investigators from both the Sheriff's office and Macon Police Department when the two merge.
