Longtime Macon city council member Elaine Lucas will run for a seat in the new Bibb County government this year.

She made her announcement Tuesday afternoon at Macon City Hall.

Lucas will run in Bibb County's District 3. That includes part of the city ward she now represents, but also some new areas, like the Sofkee area in south Bibb.

She said she's running partly to keep the county's leaders true to their word to Maconites as they merge the city of Macon and Bibb County.

Lucas is a longtime educator and activist who was first elected to the Macon City Council in 1983.

She is the first candidate to enter the District 3 race.
