) -- Police said a student shot herself in the leg at a parking lot outside of Grady High School Wednesday morning.
Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said the 17-year-old student shot herself in the upper leg at about 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot at the school at 929 Charles Allen Drive in Midtown Atlanta.
Jones said APD officers had secured the gun from the scene.
Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos said investigators believe the shoot was an accident.
They reported the girl was alert, conscious and breathing as she was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she is in stable condition.
Officials say the school went on hard lockdown during the investigation. Students who want to leave are being allowed to do so with their parents. The school will resume normal operations at noon.
