COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Hundreds gathered at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center at Fort Benning during the weekend to remember the 173rd Airborne Brigade, the first U.S. combat unit in the Vietnam War.
Retired Chief Warrant Officer Michael Doran of Enterprise, Ala., said the 173rd was deployed to hot areas. He joined veterans in cleaning a huge monument on the Memorial Walk of Honor on Saturday. The names of their fellow soldiers killed in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan were read, and a prayer service was held on Sunday.
Tarlon Mobley of Winterfield, N.C., told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that he had several close calls with the 173rd in Vietnam. In one case, he started to brush something away from his leg and realized it was a trip wire for a mine.
