The first season of the new Mercer football program is almost at an end. The Bears have practiced all school year, but spring practice has been a little different.

"I think the biggest difference is, there's light at the end of the tunnel," explained head coach Bobby Lamb. "As we told our young men when we started practice we no longer have a head start on other schools. Everybody's been getting spring practice. Everybody's been getting winter work-outs."

"There's more of a sense of urgency at practice which is what you need."

As far as depth, Lamb is most conserned about the defensive and offensive line.

"While we feel good about our front lines, we don't have much depth there. Certainly, those are two positions where the game is won and lost and we want to develop depth."

The freshman joining the Bears in the fall will have a chance to help out at those spots.

"We signed five defensive lineman and seven offensive lineman," said Lamb. "So out of those 12 guys coming in early, we'll give them an opportunity to see what they can do."

Safety and cornerback are the two positions Lamb is most confident about.

"We have five safeties and five corners that we feel very comfortable about and with the depth there, that's also going to help our special teams. Those positions are generally inon special teams."

Fans are invited to come out for Mercer's first spring game on April 13. Gates open at 11:30. Game starts at noon.
