Tuesday morning, Macon mayor Robert Reichert joined many other mayors around the country to honor volunteers in the community.
Mayor Reichert proclaimed a day of recognition of national service. He highlighted the work of more than ten groups who worked to improve the Macon community and ultimately make it a better place.
Reichert said that the government cannot do everything and should not, but that many services are better delivered by private organizations, officially registered charities, like 501(c)3 organizations.
Shirley Lester, a member of the Foster Grandparent Program, said "I'm feeling a sense of now we can really be known more in the community." She appreciated the support of the mayor and commissioners to help spread awareness of the different volunteer programs in the Macon-area.
Some of the organizations recognized on Tuesday included VISTA, Citizens on Patrol, and the Foster Grandparents Program.
