Warren F. "Scotty" Shepherd, a retired 30-year veteran of the Bibb County sheriff's department, plans to run for the District 7 commission seat on the new consolidated government.

The 64-year-old Shepherd said Wednesdayhis background with the county government and his ability to get along with people makes him the best candidate for the post.

Shepherd, who lives on Bonanza Drive off Hartley Bridge Road in south Bibb County, also said he's the best-qualified person torepresent the southern part of the county.

He said recent elected officials forthe area didn't live in subsouth and couldn't relate to the people there as well as he can.

After retiring from the sheriff's department, Shepherd made two unsuccessful runs for sheriff, one in 2004and the other in 2008.

District 7 covers parts of south Macon and south Bibb County.

Qualifying for this year's election is scheduled to begin April 22. The elections is scheduled for July 16.
