Seven Bibb County graduating seniors now have help paying for college thanks to the Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship. Each student was awarded $1,000.

They are all student athletes, have at least a 2.5 GPA and have been accepted to a two or four-year university.

Students nominated for the scholarship also have to have a caring attitude, show positive leadership and demonstrate high moral character.

Two of the recipients are from Northeast High School, Al Lucas' alma mater.

Brian Whitaker, Westside

Lucas died after suffering a spinal cord injury in an arena football game in Los Angeles.

He was the son of Macon City council member Elaine Lucas and Georgia State Senator David Lucas.
