LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (WXIA)-- The co-founder of Dragon*Con, Edward Kramer, is in Gwinnett County Superior Court for a bond hearing on child molestation charges that were filed more than a decade ago.
In January, Kramer was brought back to Gwinnett County from Connecticut, where police said he violated the terms of his bond by staying in a hotel room with a 14-year-old boy.
He was arrested in 2000 on child molestation charges involving three underage boys but was able to delay his trial by claiming health problems, including a painful spinal condition.
Gwinnett jail officials confirm they've already paid close to $29,000 for his medical care since January alone.
He has also filed more than 200 special requests for religious materials and access to a typewriter to help with his legal case.
His defense attorney, Brian Steel, did not return our request for comment yesterday.
Kramer is the co-founder of Dragon*Con, a science fiction convention that's drawn huge crowds to Atlanta for more than 25 years.
Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter revoked Kramer's bond two years ago and fought to get him back in Georgia.
"He claims he's a victim of not having a trial, but every time we get him to trial he says, 'I can't physically do it'," Porter said in 2011. "I think one thing that these events seem to show is that he's not telling the truth about that."
