Danny Glover says he's dropping out of his race for the Bibb County Commission District 3 seat, saying he wants to focus on "personal matters."

His statement does not describe those matters, and he would not answer questions after his brief statement.

Glover qualified for the race against Elaine Lucas, a longtime Macon city councilwoman, and Terry Tripp.

Today, he endorsed Tripp in the race. He said he was concerned that he and Tripp would split the vote against Lucas.

Gloverentered the racedespite facing a misdemeanor marijuana charge filed against him in Jones County in January. He blamed Lucas for bringing that charge to light this spring.

Glover posted this statement on Facebook:

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce my intent to withdraw my candidacy from the District 3 Macon-Bibb Commission race.

"My commitment and sincere desire to improve the quality of life for all the citizens in our community has never been stronger; however, at this time I must focus my attention on some personal matters.

"I wish to thank those who have supported my campaign and apologize to them for this unexpected announcement. While this is not the best time for me to focus on a campaign, I trust that those who have supported me in this race will also support my decision.
