Kiley Karmazinas, a math teacher at West Laurens Middle School is our first "My Teacher is Tops" winner of the 2013-14 school year.

Karmazinas was nominated by Abbie and Ashlyn Sanders, twin 7th graders who are both in her math class.

"She isn't like those other teachers that are just there to teach," the twins explained in their letter. "She's there to be a friend and guide us to be the best we can be."

Karmazinas has been teaching for 10 years. She started in Wilkinson County, but for the last 9 years has been teaching at West Laurens, the same school she attended as a child.

"I think it's awesome," Karmazinas told 13WMAZ Junior Journalist Josh Barker. "I think it makes us have pride in our school, and I want to make my students feel the same way when they leave, that they want to come home."

This isn't Karmazinas' first award. She also won Teacher of the Year. She says her secret to success is "always try to form connections with your students early on."
