Stratford is adding lacrosse to its athletic department in 2014.

Athletic Director Grady Smith says the proposal has been on the table for several years, but last year, the school put together a committee to make it happen.

"We visited some schools in Atlanta very comparable to our size, and it just started taking off," he says.

Stratford will start by sponsoring a middle school boys and a girls team with the Macon Youth Lacrosse League next year.

"It will be open to people that don't go to Stratford and are middle school age. The following year we'll go into our JV team, which will be just Stratford students8th through 12th, and that yearI think our middle school team will also be just Stratford students," explains Smith.

The varsity squad will debut in the 2015-2016 school year.

Paving the way for the new program will be head coachJosh Pico, a Johns Hopkins grad with both playing and coaching experience.

Smith says, "He's helped start a couple programs. He's a young guy, very energetic, and he knows what it's all about, and he knows it's going to be a give and take situation with our other spring sports."

Hesays about 45 GHSA schools have lacrosse programs, most of them in the Atlanta area, but he hopes that list will keep growing and the sport will catch on throughout the state.

Stratford will host an information session Thursday, November 14th at 7 p.m. in the Stefanis Lecture Hall.
