CLARKSVILLE, TENN. (Tennessean.com) - A Clarksville woman charged with killing her 7-month-old daughter Friday told police "Jesus came down" and took her daughter to heaven while she was bathing her, according to an arrest warrant.
Stefany Paige Johnson, 24, was charged with criminal homicide after Clarksville police responded to her 1311 Sonja Drive home at 3:40 a.m. Friday after receiving reports of a woman yelling and screaming, as well as being naked in the road, according to the warrant.
Johnson was uncooperative and belligerent when police arrived, and officers found 7-month-old Astrid Johnson's body on the couch upon entering the home. Additionally, police found no evidence of attempts to provide medical care to the baby.
Police determined Johnson is the sole care provider in the household, with the warrant saying her husband is deployed with the military.
When later asked by police what happened, Johnson said "Jesus came down and took Astrid to heaven" while she was bathing her. Police concluded Johnson's negligence resulted in the child's death.
Johnson is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail and was scheduled have an arraignment hearing at 8 a.m. Monday.
