Georgia's Dept. of Public Health confirmed Thursday the first case of a mosquito-borne virus in a person.

Officials spoke with 11Alive's Blayne Alexander and said a person who recently traveled to the Caribbean with a group has the virus. They did not say where in Georgia the person lives.

Lab results were done by CDC, which confirmed the virus.

Until recently, the virus, transmitted through mosquito bites, was mostly seen overseas, with strong numbers in the Caribbean Islands. But in recent weeks, the Centers for Disease Control have reported cases in 10 US states, including 23 cases in Florida alone.
