A woman is dead following a house fire Thursday in the Bloomfield area of South Macon. Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said the victim is 87-year-old Eleanor Stranahan. Crews were called to the home at 2904 Alfred Drive, near the intersection of Nisbett Drive, at about 4:21 p.m.
Bibb County Fire Chief Marvin Riggins said the bedroom was the source of the fire, and that the cause is likely the result of a space heater.
Stranahan's neighbor says he, along with a family member who lives nextdoor, tried to help save the woman, but the smoke was too strong and Stranahan couldn't get up.
Chief Riggins says they've ruled out arson. He says it's also unclear whether the home had working smoke detectors.
