A Warner Robins man was sentenced to life in prison Monday for the August 2010 murder of his wife.

Jose Garcia, 47, pleaded guilty in Houston County Superior Court to one count of murder in the death of Maria Garcia.

The couple was separated for more than a month when Jose Garcia went to her residence. They got into an argument when Garcia pulled out a gun and shot her twice killing her instantly, according to a news release from the court.

Garcia then got a knife and stabbed himself in an apparent attempt to commit suicide, the news release stated.

A neighbor, a friend of Maria Garcia, heard gunshots and saw a vehicle matching Jose Garcia's leaving the scene.

In the days prior to the shooting, Garcia had spoken with a family friend about buying a gun to kill his wife and himself, the news release stated.

The Garcias were raising four children together.

"The murder of Maria Garcia was a senseless and cowardly act of domestic violence," stated Houston County District Attorney George Hartwig in the news release. "The Houston DA's office will continue to seek justice for those who have lost a loved one to domestic violence murder."
