One Kathleen teacher is ending her 31-year career with a big surprise.

She teaches it all, but her students say she really shines at math and science.

13WMAZ Junior Journalist Allen Brooks paid Jane Bellflower, a Matt Arthur Elementary teacher, a visit Wednesday and let her know she's this week's "My Teacher is Tops" winner.

Zaria Wilson nominated Ms. Bellflower for the award.

"I think Ms. Bellflower is the best teacher at Matt Arthur Elementary School. She is sweet, inspirational, and the best teacher ever," Wilson said.

She's been teaching for 31 years, and now she's about to retire.

"I feel awesome, but I couldn't teach without all these great kids," Bellflower said.

Today, the class unveiled a class pet.

She says being creative is important because of a lesson she learned years ago.

"Well, I was always taught by one of my first principals that you should always have have something in the classroom living besides the teacher and the students," she said.

And it's that advice that makes her current boss a big fan.

"I was very excited. She is such a gifted teacher, the level of engagement is phenomenal. Students love her," Principal Richard Rogers said.
