The Planning and Zoning Commission deferred a decision on a downtown Macon church demolition until the December meeting in a vote 4-1.

Historic Macon Foundation is opposing plans to demolish a church to make room for a Dunkin Donuts.

The former Tremont Temple Baptist Church, 860 Forsyth St. was built in 1907 and was a meeting place during the civil rights movement in Macon.

Josh Rogers, director of the Foundation, said he plans to oppose the demolition at the meeting because the church is listed as a contributing structure in Macon's historic district.

Church trustee Theresa Robinson said the building is too costly for the church to keep.

The congregation moved to Bloomfield Road about six and a half years ago, and the building is plagued with major leaks in the roof, mold, significant water damage and termites.
