The school hopes the new chapel will be ready by 2015.

Wesleyan College held a "Ground Blessing" for its planned new chapel.

The $6 million Pierce Chapel, with a planned completion date of February 2015, will house a worship center and performance venue. It can be used for wedding rentals and community events. It will also provide a home for the campus chaplain and student ministry organizations.

The 11,500 square-foot facility will sit on the edge of Foster Lake between James and Hightower halls. It will seat 300 people. Grading work started on the facility a few months ago.

Wesleyan, the first women's college in the world, was founded in 1836 by community leaders and the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
