MACON, Ga. – Sophomore attackman Chris Baxa scored a career-high five goals and the Mercer men's lacrosse team outshot Texas 41-20 en route to a dominating 13-2 victory at Mercer University Stadium on Friday night.
Mercer remained unbeaten at home this season and improved to 3-2 overall. Texas, a competitive club team that competes in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association, dropped its third-straight game and fell to 7-3 overall.
All five of Baxa's shots on goal found net as the second-year man finishing one goal shy of tying teammates Zack Ward and Cole Branch for the most single-game goals in program history. Ward equaled Baxa's five points on Friday, scoring four goals and notching one assist in the triumph.
Mercer got things going right away, as junior midfieldier Justin Evans won the opening faceoff and dished to Ward who scored the game's first goal just 10 seconds into play. The Bears continued to pour it on until the final moments, going ahead 13-0 in the third quarter before the Longhorns posted two late goals to avoid the shutout.
Evans added five ground balls to his assist while also winning 10-of-16 faceoffs. Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Nugent faced eight shots on goal and made six saves while improving to 3-2 on the year.
Mercer converted 19-of-22 clear attempts while Texas was 14-of-15 in the category. Mercer was 0-for-1 in extra-man opportunities, but stopped the Longhorns on all three of their man-up situations.
A quick turnaround sees Mercer hit the road for a Tuesday test at Maryland-Baltimore Country. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
