After helping the Mercer baseball team to a key road series victory, junior Grant Papelian was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.
This is the first weekly conference award of Papelian's career and league-high sixth received by a Mercer player this season.
Papelian was instrumental in Mercer's huge 3-1 week on the diamond that included a mid-week triumph at Georgia Tech and a road series victory at Florida Gulf Coast.
The Marietta, Ga. native threw 10.0 innings on the week and allowed no runs on just six hits to go along with three strikeouts.
Papelian started the week by throwing a scoreless inning of relief to help Mercer sweep the season series from Georgia Tech with a 4-3 extra-inning win in Atlanta on April 23. He followed that performance up with his first career complete game after allowing no runs on just five hits to go along with two strikeouts to guide the Bears to a 4-0 shutout victory over FGCU on April 26.
Papelian's complete game is now the A-Sun leading sixth of the season for Mercer, which is the most in a single-season for the Orange and Black since the 2005 edition of the Bears also hurled six complete games.
Papelian and the rest of the Bears are off all of this week due to final exams and won't return to the diamond until May 6, when it travels to Gainesville for a match-up against No. 5 Florida.
