The Mercer women's basketball team got a much-deserved break Wednesday after winning the first round of the Atlantic Sun women's basketball tournament last night in Florida.
The Bears ended their season with a road loss to Jacksonville and had to turn right around and face them in the first round of the tournament, and what a turnaround it was they limited the Dolphins to 36 points while the ladies put up 59 points on the board.
Every time the Bears have gone up against the Dolphins this year the two teams have kept the score close.
Head coach Susie Gardner says everything clicked Tuesday night and at the end of the game she was even a bit surprised.
"I was so caught up in the game and how well out players played just directing the game and fix some things that our players didn't do on Saturday, Gardner reflected. So it was like each play was important to me and then when it all ended I was like Wow that was really the score so that was really cool to see that score. "
Just to give you some extra perspective on this, 36 points ranks as the fewest points scored by an opponent this season.
Mercer has now won at least one A-Sun Championship game in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.
Top-ranked Florida Gulf Coast is next up in the semi's Saturday.
