Several central Georgia schools made a jump from the GISA to the GHSA before this season.
The change doesn't just mean new opponents for Mount de Sales Academy. This season comes with a new head coach.
Keith Hatcher is a Mount de Sales alum. He's following up two coaches with long careers at Mount de Sales: Mike Garvin and Robert Slocum.
"You're looking at two coaches over the past 50 years," Hatcher said. "So [I'm] stepping into the role, hopefully being able to leave my mark after those guys. [That] is very special to me."
Hatcher played ball for Slocum during his days as a Cav. Now, it's his turn to lead the program after Slocum stepped down to focus on his role as athletic director.
The new head coach brings college football experience to the field. Hatcher was on staff at Valdosta State, Murray State, and Georgia Southern. He joined the Mount de Sales staff in 2013 as the Cavaliers' defensive coordinator.
Hatcher and the Cavaliers are focusing on three words in his first season as head coach.
"Our motto has become 'Expect to Win'," Hatcher siad. "We're working on that throughout camp - just nurturing an environment of competition. When we go out on Friday nights, we want to expect to win and compete, and do anything we can to leave the field with a win on those nights."
Mount de Sales opens at St Anne Pacelli on August 29, and has more central Georgia opponents on the schedule than in years past.
Georgia Military College, Twiggs County, and Wilkinson County show up on the schedule, as does First Presbyterian Day School. The Macon school played in the GISA until its 2010 jump to GHSA competition.
Mount de sales keeps rivals Stratford Academy, and Tattnall Square Academy, on the schedule. They also joined the GHSA in time for this season.
Here's Mount de Sales' upcoming schedule for the 2014 season:
8/29 @ St Anne Pacelli
9/19 Strong Rock Christian
10/3 Twiggs County
10/10 @ FPD
10/17 @ Wilkinson County
10/24 @ Stratford Academy
10/31 Tattnall Square Academy
11/07 Region 7/1A Play-in
