Mercer women's basketball head coach Susie Gardner wrapped up a strong 2013-14 recruiting class by announcing the signing of Kahlia Lawrence on Monday afternoon.
Lawrence joins Kayla Potts, Alexandria Williams, Madi Mitchell, Sydni Means, Brittnee Broadway, Shonterria Kitchens and Jalyn Slaughter in a 2013-14 signing class that was ranked No. 143 in the nation according to All Star Girls Report.
"This is an exciting day for Mercer women's basketball as Kahlia Lawrence caps off an outstanding 2013-14 signing class," Gardner said. "Kahlia has had an amazing career at Kendrick High School under head coach Sterling Hicks and led the team to an undefeated season and a state championship as a senior. Not only does Kahlia score the ball exceptionally well, she plays tenacious defense and is an excellent student as well which is the type of person we try to bring to Mercer University. This is an exceptional class from top to bottom and we expect great things from this class.
Lawrence is a 5-8 guard from Columbus, Georgia who is currently playing for head coach Sterling Hicks at Kendrick High School.
"Kahlia was both an outstanding basketball player and student here at Kendrick," Hicks said. "Kahlia received all these awards and broke all of our records on the court while maintaining a 4.2 GPA. Kahlia is a true student-athlete and I am proud to say that I had an opportunity to coach her."
Lawrence finished her career at Kendrick in style as she led the Cherokees to an undefeated 29-0 season and a 2014 Class AA State Championship. Lawrence averaged 26.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game as a senior on her way to being named Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-Classifications Girls Player of the Year, Region 5AA Player of the Year and Bi-City Player of the Year. Lawrence leaves Kendrick High School as the record holder for most points in a single game (45), most points in a single season (759) and most points in a career (2,086).
