Mercer's football season is over, but its players are still winning awards.
The Pioneer Football League named quarterback John Russ the offensive freshman of the year on Monday. Russ took home the league's offensive player of the week honor twice during the regular season.
Russ completed 122 of 233 passes for 1,916 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2013. He lead the Bears to a ten win season, the most for a start-up program in NCAA history. Russ is also a running threat, carrying 160 times for 903 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
Mercer's signal caller will face a tough challenge next season, when the Bears move to the Southern Conference.
