Accused Eastman officer killer pleads not guilty

Eastman Officer Tim Smith was fatally shot while responding to a call in August 2016.

The man accused of killing Eastman Officer Tim Smith pleaded not guilty in court Thursday.

At a Dodge County Superior Court arraignment, Royheem Deeds pleaded not guilty to all nine counts of his indictment -- five of those charges are related to the death of Officer Tim Smith.

That includes malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault on a peace officer and possession of a firearm by a first offender probationer.

Deeds signed the plea and it will be entered into to court records.

Both the state and defense teams are now preparing for trial.

District Attorney Tim Vaughn gave the defense team a hard drive of evidence collected by the GBI.

Both teams discussed scheduling upcoming court dates, but right now there are no new dates are the calendar.
