Family celebrates Atlanta woman's 100th birthday with socially-distanced celebration, car parade

On Feb. 24, Millie Kinbar turned 100 years old!

ATLANTA — Though we're still in a pandemic, one Atlanta woman's family still found a way to celebrate her milestone birthday safely and in a special way.

On Feb. 24, Millie Kinbar turned 100 years old.

Family celebrated Millie last year for her 99th birthday with a huge bash, with family coming from all over to celebrate. A short time later, as we know, things shut down because of COVID-19.

Millie hasn't seen most of her family since then.

This year, family said she knew that her birthday celebration would be a little different. But there were still a few surprises.

On Wednesday, family held a birthday celebration with "as much love and excitement as celebrations in years past," but with social distancing in place.

Millie's youngest daughter, Suzan, who also lives in Atlanta, arranged for a huge "Happy 100 Birthday Millie!" sign to be placed in front of her Hammond Glen retirement community on her birthday.

But the festivities didn't stop there, having been vaccinated - along with her fellow residents - Millie was able to enjoy a birthday lunch and a "traditional" Hammond Glen happy hour, all followed up with a car parade.

Family said her oldest son, Philip - who Millie hasn't seen since last February and is now also vaccinated -  also drove up from Florida to celebrate. Other family members who couldn't be there in person still showed their love by sending flowers, cards and letters. They'll top off the week with a Zoom celebration.
