What is price gouging and how can you report it?

If you think you've been the victim of price gouging, here's how you can report it

In the days following Tropical Storm Irma, we saw reports of price gouging by gas stations in Central Georgia.

While we're still monitoring Hurricane Michael, this information is always valuable to know.

What is it?

Price Gouging is defined by LegalDictionary.com as "The practice of raising prices on certain types of goods and services to an unfair level, especially during a state of emergency."

It's illegal, but unfortunately still happens in emergency situations

When could I report it?

According to the Georgia Consumer Protection Unit, two things have to happen before the state can charge dealers with gouging.

One: The governor has to issue a state of emergency.

Two: The governor has to order a price freeze.

How would I report it?

To report price gouging in Georgia, contact the Consumer Protection Unit at 404-651-8600 or 1-800-869-1123.
