Former inmate adopts dog he used to work with in Gwinnett Jail Dogs program

It's all about second chances!

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Through the years, the Gwinnett County Jail Dogs program has become known for offering both the inmates and the rescue dogs they take in second chances.

That was the case for rescue dog Lee.

Lee was scheduled to be euthanized on the same day the Gwinnett Jail Dog program intervened to take him in. He was in the program for 2 and 1/2 years, waiting for someone to take him home to his forever home.

Lee finally was - he was adopted by the inmate handler he used to work with on the inside of the jail.

The Gwinnett Jail Dogs program recently celebrated a milestone - the program marked its 500th adoption at the end of February.

It was started back in 2010 by the Gwinnett County Sheriff and the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia. Run from the Gwinnett County Jail, it gives "carefully selected inmates an opportunity to give back to society by providing foster care and basic obedience training to homeless dogs to prepare them for adoption."
