Campers in Forsyth put survival skills to the test at Primitive Wilderness Weekend

People came from across the country to get a crash course in surviving in the wild

FORSYTH, Ga. — There's nothing like the great outdoors to kick-start a fantastic weekend, and these campers are getting some fresh air in Forsyth this weekend.

At Primitive Wilderness Camp, David Mead and Joel Graves teach campers how to make it in the woods.

"It started out as a hobby or a passion to hunt and do it more respectfully with the most challenge possible," says Mead, owner of Mead Longbows. "Then it turned into a deeper passion and sharing that with people."

The camp travels all over the country teaching people how to survive in the wilderness. On day one, campers assembled their own bows and learned how to shoot.

Mead wants to give campers all the skills they need, while also getting people out into nature.

"People of all ages need to get in touch with nature and their roots and what they can do with their hands," says Mead. "I think everyone's losing that today."

The three-day camp is being hosted by Quinn Connally on over 6,000 acres of land.

"This is my thing. I like being in nature," says camper Steve Heath. "You shoot some arrows and you just kind of forget. It's just zen and you just concentrate on you, the bow, the arrow, and the target."

Getting in touch with their zen is a big part of why Mead loves archery.

"You don't have to worry about anything. You don't have to think about anything," says Mead. "It's meditation and it's really relaxing."

Primitive Wilderness Weekend is hosted by Mead Longbows and the American Survival Company.
