Bibb Fire Department teaches fire safety through Christmas tree demo

Fire Safety Educator Jeremy Webb gives tips on how to correctly care for Christmas trees to prevent fires.

MACON, Ga. — If you have a real, live Christmas tree in your home, you may want to listen up.

The Macon-Bibb Fire Department hosted a demonstration Tuesday morning at their training facility to show just how quickly a tree can go up in flames, if not cared for correctly.

Fire Safety Educator Jeremy Webb recommends watering your tree daily, to prevent it from drying out.

He also says if the prongs fall off freely and easily, then the tree is completely dried out and must be discarded it immediately.

Webb shared other tips on how to correctly use space heaters and outlets to avoid a tragedy this holiday season.

  • When using space heaters, make sure they are three feet away from any furniture or wall, all the way around.
  • Do not overload outlets with 'daisy-chained' extension cords and surge protectors.
  • Do not plug in your Christmas tree lights overnight.
  • If you have an artificial tree, take a look at the packaging to see if it is flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide and smoke alarm.
  • Discuss a fire escape plan for your family

Webb also says to educate any kids in the household on the dangers of getting too close to fireplaces and space heaters.
