PSA: Check under hood and honk horn to save cats

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- People are turning to social media to help save cats this winter season.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- People are turning to social media to help save cats this winter season.

There are numerous "Save the cats" postings on Facebook that show pictures of cats rescued from car engines and wheel wells. During the winter time, it is common for cats to hide in these places to stay warm.

"I have a dog and fortunately she tends to scare cats away from our vehicles whenever I take her out on a leash, but I'm grateful people are taking the time to bring this issue to light," Murray Hill resident Jennifer Lieberman said.

PSAs encourage drivers to "knock on the hood" or honk, during the winter months to alert cats who might be seeking shelter on tires or other "hard-to-reach" places.

According to the warnings, cats that spend most of their time outside are killed or critically injured each year after falling asleep in or around vehicles.
