ST. LOUIS - A Jefferson County babysitter is behind bars after allegations she threw a 10 month old girl in her care across the room.
The family of that infant is now speaking out.
"She was sweet, happy...never a fussy baby," said Michele West, great aunt of that 10 month old girl known as Quinn.
But when baby Quinn's mom Heather came to pick her up from babysitter and family friend Katie Hartwig's home on January 4th, she knew something was very wrong.
"Quinn just started vomiting profusely out of her nose and mouth. Foam was just coming out of her mouth," said West.
After being taken to the hospital, Quinn's family received a devastating diagnosis from doctors
"Her little skull was just bashed in. They said there is some minor brain damage. but that may not ever be detectable. They have to monitor her for seizures for two years," said West.
Hartwig, 31, would soon tell investigators about the violent events of that day.
"She squeezed the baby around her ribs, under her arms. She threw her across the room onto the kitchen floor. She went a laid her down on the couch and put a blanket over her," said West.
Police documents tell the same story, with Hartwig account in the Probable Cause Statement indicating: "Katie said she forcefully threw Q.M onto her kitchen floor by her underarms…."
Hartwig is now facing felony charges of child abuse, endangering the welfare of a child and secondary charges of possession of marijuana. Police documents indicate drugs and paraphernalia were found in her home at the time of the incident- something Quinn's family says they had no prior knowledge of. Baby Quinn now faces months of recovery ...
"We thought it was better to have a trusting friend, that was one on one, who seemed to love her like we did," said West.
